Aging Impacts Driver SafetyResearch shows that older drivers are safer drivers—up to a point. “They know the importance of speed limits,” says internist John Nuschke, M.D., of Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. “But aging also causes impairments in vision, hearing, reflexes and muscle tone.” And older drivers may be out of date on auto safety equipment and rules of the road. Drive Yourself SAFE is a free four-part program designed to update drivers age 50 and over. It also includes information on how to assess whether it’s still safe for an elderly person to drive.
